With 13 returning seniors, the LHS boys’ soccer team set a goal to sweep the championship title this year. With many strengths, including teamwork, good defense and no weak links, achieving their goal was no problem

Most of the boys starting on the team have played soccer since they were five years old and love the competitive side of the sport the most.

Some of the most memorable games this season include the game against Viewmont where they tied with the reigning 5A champs. The Davis vs Layton game was also memorable for Brendon Stansfield who scored the game winning goal. Brayden Elton says “It was the best and coolest win because Davis is a very hard team to beat.”

This year’s biggest region challenges were Davis, Viewmont, and Syracuse. Although there were many good teams to beat, the LHS soccer team prevailed and won the region title.

Chemistry among players made for a tough defense, preventing many teams from scoring. “Team work makes the dream work” seemed to drive the success of the team.

1983 was the first year of high school soccer. Davis won in the 4A category. The 5A region started in 1995 with Viewmont to win in first. In 2003 Layton won the 5A region title for the first time.

In the semifinals, Layton was victorious in an overtime goal shot by Kaden Amano against Copper Hills. Jeremiah Jensen with SportsBeat tweeted out, “Kaden Amano scored the golden goal with one minute left in the 1st overtime to send the Layton Lancers to the 5A State Soccer Championship.” May 25th, the boys play at the Rio Tinto stadium against Herriman .
