With third place in Region, the Lady Lancer volleyball advanced to the state playoffs.  Their first seed was against Herriman in which they lost.  After this game, they dropped into the consolation bracket. They played against Granger, securing all three matches as victories. Continuing, they won against Riverton and lost to Copper Hill. They placed eighth in the state playoffs.

Senior, Suzanne Katoa, #10, played outside hitter and middle blocker. An outside hitter plays on the far-left side of the net and a middle blocker plays in the front row and blocks the oncoming ball. She has been involved in volleyball since she was twelve. Growing up, she had spent time watching her older sisters. One sister went on to play at BYU and the other played for the Runnin’ Utes at Utah. Katoa liked the fast pace of the game and looked forward for her chance on the court. She began playing for Layton as a freshman, but really enjoyed her senior year and the friendship of her teammates.  She feels it was a great ending to volleyball.  “I feel we enjoyed the game more, rather than feeling so pressured to win.”  We learned to work hard on the court and to work hard with our teammates.” Katoa will not pursue playing volleyball in college.  She hopes to devote more time to her academics.

Katoa believes the season’s challenges were varied. The home game against Davis was a challenge. Three games turned into five with three sets apiece; however, the Lady Lancers won the match with a two-point lead. Challenges like that forced the team to work harder to improve individually and as a team. Parting advice from Katoa: “players need to stay consistent with plays, keep a positive attitude, and fight until the very end.” Katoa was proud to play for the Lancers this season.

Additional senior team players were Shelby Moss, Mallory Anderson, and Katrina BroadheadMoss was the setter and has played since her freshman year. Anderson was libero, a player specialized in defensive skills renowned for their blocking. Broadhead played middle blocker dominating with her height and blocks.
